ANGLING ON TELEVISION: Hier Gaan Ons Alweer Series 23 picks up speed!

Hier Gaan Ons Alweer (Here we go again) is the top angling show on national TV and will broadcast its 23rd series in 2025 on #144, KykNet every Monday night at 17:30. This year it is completely different and aimed at spoiling the viewers with a variety of note, from saltwater surf, boat, estuary, bass, carp, barbel, kurper and even trout on fly. Werner Lubbe gave the art of vertical jigging a good go for a first-timer and caught some beautiful fish off Mamlambo, but also lost a big fish or two – just enough to get him coming back for more. Pieter Kruger caught this hard fighting kingfish off Blue Eyed Boy operating out of Zavora Lodge in Mozambique. Thinus van Staden from All Out Angling went right up the West Coast to the Kunene River mouth in search of those trophy-size kob. Gilbert Foxcroft, our own 5 times World Champion, takes viewers to the Olifants River on an epic adventure, conquering crocs, hippos and severe snags to land a few awesome fish like these. The quest for prize game fish and large edibles continued at Zavora, and Pieter Kruger landed yet another beautiful couta (king mackerel) off Blue Eyed Boy. 2: Jacques (jnr) Moleer is an experienced skipper and good angler who operates Blue Eyed Boy and runs the Zavora Lodge with his dad Jacques snr. Tying rigs, changing baits and putting clients on fish comes quite natural to him and he does these things as second nature. Zavora Lodge is actually spoilt with great charters and excellent anglers. Another husband and wife team running a charter is Hennie and Antoinette Kaufmann, operating off Llewelyn Moz. Hennie specializes in billfish and has landed and released many a billfish on his boats. We had the privilege of getting a one-on-one tutorial from Hennie on exactly how to rig a half beak as bait. After getting the training, Werner Lubbe had to show what he learned by doing his own rig, in preparation for the next day’s fishing. On our last night in camp at Zavora we had a great fish braai and also produced a few tutorials for viewers, this one specifically on Squid jigs. Early next morning we packed up at Zavoro, said our last goodbyes, had a quick breakfast and then took off to the next destination. After quite a long drive, we reached our destination at Blue Paradise Lodge in Vilanculos, where we could practically drive up onto the beach. What a view from the Conqueror, overlooking the lake part behind the series of islands, as the sun rises over this picturesque setting. At Blue Paradise, there are four of these beach houses available to rent, with a communal braai area, launching strip and swimming pool. From the lodge two charters operate the boats Allegre and Mamlambo. Blue Paradise offer island trips to Bazaruto, Benguerra, Margaruqe and Santa Carolina. These trips include snorkelling, snorkelling gear and cooked lunch. They also offer fishing charters which includes big game fishing, jigging, popping, dropshot and fun family outings to catch lula (calamari). Trips to park Zinave to view the big five for those who would like to experience Mozambique's wildlife. Apart from the fishing in the area which is spectacular, there are also so many photography opportunities and the camera crew had a ball shooting some different shots as well. Here Lee Foxcroft enjoyed himself on the beach. Allegre was the object for some great pics on one of the islands we visited to do some snorkeling. On one of the days we went searching for the billfish: they were not on the bite at all so on the way back we stopped at a rock island and had a few casts to see if there were any gamefish around. Instead, we came across a shoal of these gobblers. They are called wolf herring, and the name truly speak to the behavior. These ravenous eaters are hunting other fish in packs and would furiously attack a lure. These sharp teeth are really dangerous and you do not want your fingers caught up here! On the bow of Allegre is a real handy piece of furniture – a bow casting support. Here Pieter Kruger was standing comfortably to cast a lure, especially at boils of feeding fish. You can lean your body against the support and have your hands free for casting, even in rough seas. On our way back from the deep, we found a quiet little bay as we passed through two of the islands with some activity in the shallows. A stick bait cast or two delivered some hard fighting young kingfish on light tackle. The green jobfish has quite an aggressive take, especially with the squid jigs. Sometimes when you lose the fish, you can simply just jig again and the next one will take it again. In Afrikaans they are called groen jobvis, kaakap of kaalkop. This one took the driftbait on the Kona. Look at the way he ate it – really indulging! Johan Smit is an experienced angler and skipper, who operated very successfully as deckhand and skipper on various commercial as well as sport fishing boats. Billfish is his forte and he knows his way around the ocean to find them. On a day like this day, when the bills were just not eating, he was clearly upset, standing here contemplating what he could have done better. Out at sea, the camera crew has to be ready for some chaos erupting any moment, even though it may be quiet and boring for 3 hours. But when the reels start screaming the cameras must start rolling. Jessica is patiently awaiting her moment while hiding from the sun. This is one of the least favourite tasks to be performed by any deep sea angler – filling up the boat for a trip, as it feels like a month’s salary disappearing into 10 plastic tanks! Focusing on the task at hand, delivering the goods for viewer pleasure.
