With the reputation of the Sharptoothed Catfish (Clarius gariepinus) now solidly embedded in the psyche of South Africa’s trophy fish hunters, it was to be expected that some sort of formal recognition would be sought by anglers who were increasingly launching expeditions to target what had become known as ‘monster’ catfish, or “barbel” as it is commonly (but incorrectly) known, and to set either a new Personal Best or set a new record.
