PRODUCT REVIEW – Tuff Cats Mbada Caravan

In mid-October Riaan ‘Alleman’ Riekert and wife Anel had the privilege to take the TuffCats Mbada off-road caravan on a coastal tour from Keurbooms to Mosselbay.

All I Can Say, Absolute Belter Of A Caravan!

Packed and ready to rumble

The friendly staff at Kempton Caravans and Leisure World gave me a quick run down on the simple setup and off we went.

My first impression looking at the caravan was “Eish, this thing is heavy!”, but  surprise-surprise it weighs only 920kg taking into consideration some of its  closest rivals. The secret behind the weight is that the body consists mostly of aluminium.

Putting the technical data behind us for now we were packed and ready to rumble. Our overnight accommodation in Colesburg gave us our first big test as the gravel road heading to the lodge was covered with stones and loose sand, but the Mbada had no problems dealing with the factors and we were pleasantly surprised by how it handled over this tough terrain.

After a comfortable night’s sleep we were ready for the last stretch of about 650km towards Keurbooms Caravan Park. On route we decided to put the Mbada through its second test, a short cut off road section from Avontuur over the mountains towards Plettenberg Bay. This road is narrow, up, and down and with a few technical areas to deal with. All that Riaan Alleman can say is that he is mightily impressed – the Mbada glided through this terrain like a hot knife through butter!

Gliding over the mountains from Avontuur to Plettenbergbaai

Our destination for the next 6 nights was Keurbooms Caravan Park situated next to Plettenberg Bay on the banks of the Keurbooms River. A full review of the caravan park to come.

For me the most impressive feature of the Mbada is the short time it takes to set up camp as is shown on the video. It took us just 10 minutes to lower the jacks, lift the roof, and put up the complete awning! This capability is perfect for when you intend to travel a lot and move between campsites.

Setup done, now for some work and relaxation

With the setup done it was time to get to work and enjoy some relaxation as well. But what is a proper review without some technical data?

  • Weight – 920kg
  • GVM 1800kg
  • Length 5280cm
  • Width 1920cm
  • Height 2400cm (1580cm excluding awning)
  • Rear overhang 1590cm
  • Water tank capacity -120 litre

The Mbada is a true gem – please feel free to contact the friendly staff at Kempton Caravans and Leisure World for a full demo.
