What to target in December

Whether holiday maker or competitive surf angler, knowing where to find fish and what bait and tackle to use is a great help. Here top surf anglers graciously give readers their hints and advice. We will be expanding this feature as we progress through the year.

INLAND GAME FISH

LAKE JOZINI – PONGOLAPOORT DAM KZN

Tigerfish

BANK OR BOAT? Boat
WHERE TO FIND THEM: Shallow drop offs, depth ranging 3-7m.
FAVOURITE SPOTS: Entrance to main lake on north western shore, pump house and rocky bank on eastern side along mountain.
WHAT BAIT TO USE: Tilapia, Chicken Hearts, Sardine, Copper Spoons.
TACKLE: 4000 Penn Battle grinder, 7ft m/h Sensation power plus rod, 22lb Abrasion mono line, 12inch carbon coated steel wire, orange beads & 8/0 Linx powerplus hooks.

SALTWATER FISH

BEACH OR BOAT? Both
WHERE TO FIND THEM: Almost anywhere off shallow reefs.
FAVOURITE SPOTS: First rocks or north of Vidal.
STATE OF THE TIDE: Best if the tide is pushing early morning or sunset into the dark.
WHAT BAIT TO USE: Live bait (3-spot Pompano or black tail) pink prawn/chokka and crayfish. Spinning tackle (surface lures and drop shot)
TACKLE (LINE CLASS, LEADER,
HOOKS, SINKERS, KNOTS): Spinning: for targeting fish up to 7kg an 11ft spinning rod with reliable reel. With bait target fish 10kg plus.
Medium to heavy rod with matching reel. A 21kg nylon live bait trace with 8/0 circle and 4/0 circle support hook. Bait trace 21kg nylon trace with 6/0 circle hook.

WHERE TO FIND THEM: Sandstrande met duidelike sloepe en sandbanke.
FAVOURITE SPOTS: Boggomsbaai, Wilderness, Swartvlei.
STATE OF THE TIDE: Laaste 2 ure van stootwater na vol; en 2 ure daarna met sakwater. Vroegoggend, laatmiddag en naghengel.
WHAT BAIT TO USE: Seekat, tjokka, sardien enlewendige aas.
TACKLE (LINE CLASS, LEADER, HOOKS, SINKERS, KNOTS): 40lb Braid of 25lb lyn. 6/0 – 8/0 hoek.
