FISHING ADVENTURES WITH ‘HALF PAST, FIRST CAST’: Take Me Back to Mexico

For most of the past decade, Hanna and I went to Anglers Inn on LakeEl Salto and/or Lake Picachos two or even three times a year. During the glorious month of November 2020, we spent a full two weeks at El Salto, fishing and living the high life. But then life sort of got in the way. Over the past few years, we’ve limited our trips to one full week annually. That’s not all bad — the limits have resulted from a desire to pursue a bunch of other work and travel opportunities, but it doesn’t make it any easier.

It’s been especially hard lately because both lakes are on a huge upswing. Yes, while they’re consistently better than anything we have at home, there are good years and better years. Last year, following a couple of good spawns, we caught more 4–7-pound largemouth than on any other trip in recent memory. As we predicted at the time, those fish continued to grow and the numbers of bass in the 8–11-pound category that have shown up so far in 2024 is astounding. Check out the images of just some of the catches.

Terri Liuzza of Louisiana annually makes the trip to El Salto, and this year she landed her PB, a 10 pound 9 ounce giant.
While El Salto is known as the “big fish lake” and Picachos is more known for numbers, the latter is starting to consistently pump up 9- and 10-pound fish year round.

Wisconsin tournament angler Kyle Carpenter forgot about the wintry cold weather at home when he landed this 9-pounder on an Alabama Rig.

People who follow our social media and that of the lodge itself know what’s happening and they’re making reservations over a year in advance to reserve ample space at the best possible times. We’re headed back in June (and I think that week is full), but if you want to go this fall or sometime in 2025, I implore you to act NOW, as Hanna had to jump through major hoops to get enough space for a group of repeat customers headed back NEXT FEBRUARY. I’m not going to say this is a “once in a lifetime” opportunity, because the fishing will certainly be good in years to come, but if you want to get after it while the getting is good, it pays to reach out to us ASAP!

We’re always happy to answer questions, so don’t hesitate to reach out. Email: fishmore@halfpastfirstcast.com.
