A Piece Of Paradise In The Buffalo Gorge
We had the privilege to meet an old fishing buddy of my grandfather, Sarel van Rensburg at the Lodge on our way to Loskop Dam for a day of hopefully good fishing (wow, were our expectations met!). Sarel and all his very friendly four-legged friends met us at the gate to take us down to our accommodation for the night.
The Lodge can accommodate 12 guests in four luxurious en-suite bedrooms complete with linen. Two rooms have double beds. Two separate units have double beds, two single beds, kitchenette and braai area. Rooms 1 and 2 are equipped with air conditioning, while rooms 3 and 4 have roof fans.
These spacious rooms with its stylish décor and practical layout give a warm homely feeling and one can just relax and be yourself. I was particularly impressed by the practical detail inside the rooms e.g. the side cupboards, the ergonomic placement of plugs, shelving in the bathroom, and cupboards to unpack your bags into.
The self-catering units are well equipped with fridges, a kitchenette with microwave, oven/stove, and tea and coffee facilities. Here they were going about the layout with the guest in mind again. The kitchenette has a spacious shelve area which makes dishing up, washing up and performing mundane tasks like making coffee for four people just a pleasure. Although this is the place you would visit to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, with as little as possible interference, the free wi-fi does give some comfort of being in touch or getting some work done.
You have full access to a beautiful, fully-equipped entertainment area with a thatched lapa, bar, kitchen and sparkling swimming pool. Here the entire family can relax in the pool, play some darts, enjoy the beautiful green lawn, watch the stars or sit around a well-protected bonfire just enjoying good company or having a great braai. There is even a viewing point overlooking the gorge and a beautiful private garden that could even be used for small intimate weddings.
While our stay was to provide a base for our fishing session at the dam, which is just a short 20 km drive away, it is a perfect holiday and/or weekend destination for families and groups to enjoy the free-ranging wildlife, convivial evenings around the campfire and the spectacular sunset views. No hunting is allowed.
Rocky River Lodge is a great getaway, with children under four years staying for free!
