Greenbacked heron (English) – Butorides striata

Hierdie algemene standvoëls is lief daarvoor om roerloos op ʼn tak te sit terwyl hulle die water dophou vir enige niksvermoedende prooi wat binne bereik kom.

Hulle is gewoonlik stil, maar as hulle skrik, uiter hulle ʼn skerp “kyah” terwyl hulle wegvlieg, en ʼn staccato “ka-ka-ka-ka” as hulle land.

Hulle skuil in begroeide varswater oewers langs riviere, mere, strome, mondings en deltas waar plantegroei oor die water hang. Hulle klim gemaklik in die takke rond, maar sit gewoonlik stil met hulle snawels vertikaal. Hulle is gewoonlik alleen, maar sal soms klein groepies vorm of saam met ander spesies slaap.

Groenrugreiers jag alleen in die dag en nag, en wag baie geduldig vir prooi om binne hulle bereik te kom. Hulle eet visse, paddas, waterinsekte en ʼn verskeidenheid waterbewonende diere.

Hulle is monogaam en gebruik stokke om ʼn nes op laaghangende takke bo die water te bou.
