Hier Gaan Ons Alweer (Here We Go Again) is the top angling show on national TV. In 2025 it is broadcasting its 23rd series on KykNET’s Channel 144, every Monday at 17:30.
This year it is completely different and aimed at spoiling viewers with a wide variety of species, locations and tactics, including surf, boat, estuary, bass, carp, barbel, tilapia and even trout on fly.
Furthermore, English speaking viewers are treated with English subtitles so they can follow the fun as well.
There are only four episodes left, so make sure you do not miss any of them!
Targeting carp in the extremely wild waters of the Olifants River is not an easy task; doing it during the filming of an extremely popular fishing series, is understanding real pressure! Gilbert Foxcroft and Adriaan van der Merwe did extremely well to catch several of these monsters.
Riverview Lodge was an excellent venue to deliver several great specimens in a short time. Schalk van Breda and his son, Noah enjoyed every moment and shared a few secrets with viewers.
A new addition to Hier Gaan Ons Alweer during Series 23 is the use of a fishing kayak. Here Protea bass angler, Hanro Loots fished right into the sunset to get those biggies on the line. Hanro fishes off the 10’6” Shad from Van Hunks.Werner Lubbe shared in some great action and caught a few good fish using feeder fishing techniques, including a barbel or two.
But the action on barbel in the Vaal Dam was better on fly, even the camera crew had some fun as well.
Wild rivers such as the Olifants is still something different. Fishing among the crocs and hippos might be a little intimidating but very rewarding!
Gilbert and Adriaan had to work hard to capture quality fish and celebrate their success in front of Lee Foxcroft’s camera.
This is what you call a ‘river lunker’. Weighing in at over 15kg, this fatty is the reward for hard work, perseverance and patience.
Fighting the fish out of the snags was the key for success, and having the right tackle surely made it possible. The Daiwa Emblem rod and reel combination is the right set-up to counter the large pectoral and tail fins of the strong river carp.
Blue Paradise Lodge has four of these beach houses available to rent, with a communal braai area, launching strip and swimming pool.
From the lodge two charters operate the boats Allegre and Mamlambo. Steve Kotze is an experienced guide and skipper, and will certainly put guests on fish like these sailies.
Blue Paradise Lodge offers island trips to Bazaruto, Benguerra, Margaruqe and Santa Carolina. These trips include snorkelling, snorkelling gear and a cooked lunch. They also offer fishing charters that includes big game fishing, jigging, popping, dropshot and fun family outings to catch lula (calamari), as well as trips to Zinave Park to view the big five for those who would like to experience Mozambique’s wildlife. The Lodge also provides airport transfers.
Blue Paradise Lodge also offers fully equipped beachfront (not on the hill!) self-catering units that can accommodate 8-10 people.

This trip was all about Duo’s, both on the bait, as well as on the bank. This father and son duo, Schalk and Noah, really valued their relationship as well as the venue with its prize catches.
Like father like son.
Jaco Pienaar aka Jakesie, with a quality carp that was caught against the opposite bank. These fish are strong so fighting them away from the trees and snags was quite a challenge. The Poseidon Phantom rods however had enough backbone to turn them every time.
The Aniseed pips seemed to have found their niche in the Vaal Dam and River. There is quite a trend developing around aniseed, and this trip was no different.
The hard Aniseed floaties also proved worthwhile, and alongside the new Wasp floaties were performing extremely well.
Upgrading from a ‘Duo’; to a ‘Trio’: Jakesie, Noah and Schalk enjoying a moment of peace and fame in front of the cameras after quite a chaotic spell where just about every rod on the bank ran at the same time.
The new range of Daiwa N’Zon rods where thoroughly put through the test
… alongside the previous older 13ft heavy N’Zon rods, to get to the opposite margins
… but both of them delivered the goods with some prize fish being caught.
