Major Bass Gauteng at Arabie

Arabie Dam was selected for the weekend’s fishing on 10 and 11 August 2019 that was attended by 12 anglers, two ladies and one junior. With the dam water level at only 48% the Saturday morning started off with approximate water temperatures of 15 degrees. A cold front moved in over the weekend and it was cold and overcast most of the time. Sunday fishing was more or less the same in windy conditions with the water temperature at 17 degrees.

Fish were far and few between. The water was murky with poor visibility. Gillnets are still a problem in this dam – a crocodile was spotted with a net caught in its mouth. The biggest bass 2.9kg was caught by Jaco Harmse, while overall winner was Paul van der Merwe. Most fish were caught on spinnerbaits, rattle traps and crankbaits. The fish preferred darker colors.

The winners L to R: 1st Place – Paul van der Merwe; 2nd Place – Neels Brink; 3rd Place – Jaco Harmse; 4th Place – Wiehan de Swardt.
Jaco Harmse caught the biggest bass, a fine specimen of 2.9kg.
