Major Bass Gauteng

Rust de Winter Dam was the venue chosen for the January fish off and was attended by 14 anglers, including one lady and one junior.

The Saturday fishing started in overcast conditions and later on light rain fell which lasted the whole day. The water was clean with a temperature of between 25ºC to 28ºC. With the dam level rising right into the tree lined shore fishing was good which made it an exciting weekend as there was a lot of structure available. On Sunday the fishing was slower due to an extreme downpour of rain in the early hours of the morning around 02:00.

The lure of choice was crankbaits and spinnerbaits but they did not produce a lot of fish. Several small bass were caught on baby flukes and small grubs with the big fish coming on topwater lures such as Horny Toads and popping frogs. Most of the big bass were caught in shallower water in the grass and structures.

RESULTS: 1st Thehan van Rooyen, 2nd Wiehan de Swardt, 3rd Reiner Gundlach, 4th (The Helmet!) Wiegman Pienaar.
