Oewerswael

Ons is aan hierdie voëltjie dank verskuldig wanneer ons agter die stokke sit sonder dat ʼn klomp goggas ons pla. Oewerswaels is algemene standvoëls. ʼn Deel van die bevolking trek egter jaarliks oor kort afstande noordwaarts of suidwaarts.

Hulle kom gewoonlik in swerms van ʼn paar voëls tot meer as ʼn duisend voor. Hulle hou naby water, maar kom wydverspreid in droë gebiede voor. Hulle smul aan vlieënde insekte. Die roep is ʼn reeks hoë tjirpgeluide, ʼn kontakroep en ʼn harde “swiee, swiee”.

Oewerswaels maak in kolonies nes deur gate in sanderige rivierwalle te grawe. Ondanks die feit dat hulle groot swerms vorm, bly hulle monogaam.
