WE CELEBRATE YOUR CATCHES – AS PUBLISHED IN STYWE LYNE TIGHT LINES MAGAZINE, DECEMBER 2019 ISSUE 718 TO ENTER: Email a hi-res jpg image and details of the catch (max 80 words!) as attachments to: stywelyne@stywelyne.net JOHAN HERSELMAN Ek en my gesin het by Witsand gegaan vir ’n kort wegbreek waar ons by die Breede River Resort & Fishing Lodge gebly het. My gerei het bestaan uit ’n 8' Elbe spinner stok en ’n Jarvis Walker 5500 met JD braid 20lb. Ek het Vrydag namiddag begin vang met lewendige aas en bucktails, op soek na die groot leervisse van die Breede; maar ongelukkig geen geluk gehad nie en het besluit om die volgende oggend weer terug te gaan. Ek het begin met ’n McArthy ‘coppertrause’ paddletail op ’n 2oz loodkoppie. Ek het dit stadig in katrol en ’n groot kap gevoel, eers het ek gedink ek sit vas, maar toe skree my katrol. Ek het geweet dit is ’n kabeljou. Ek kon ongelukkig nie die vis weeg nie, omdat ek die skaal in die huisie vergeet het. My seun Ricus het ’n klomp harders en 2 klein kolsterte gevang van die jetty af met brood en witmossel. Ek sien uit na ons volgende uitstappie na die see om ook vir Ricus touwys te maak vir kunsaas hengel. TINUS VAN GRAAN Ek het in die Oos-Kaap by Maitlands in September hierdie mooi galjoen gevang op ’n krap met ’n 6/0 hoek. Die gety was besig om op te stoot. Die galjoen het 59cm gemeet en was veilig vrygelaat. SHAUN GERICKE I fish for a ski-boat club here in East London. Of all the fish I've ever caught, a dorado has been my dream fish and number 1 on my bucket list but never caught any! I went to Mozambique many years ago and couldn't find any, I was so keen to catch a "dolphin" fish that I joked with my boat crew that if I ever caught one, I would propose to my girlfriend (we had been dating for 5 years). After 2 trips out to sea, I ACTUALLY caught an incredible 10,5kg dorado bull right here off Kweĺera River Mouth. Needless to say, dorado are now my fiancés favourite fish too! *I trust your fiancè accepts that it was a fish that prompted your proposal, and not any romantic notion! – Ed. RUBEN FOURIE My uitgebreide familie het ’n Aalwynfees gehou langs die Vaalrivier naby Deneysville, waar ons my oupa, Cobus se 70ste verjaarsdag ook sommer gevier het. Ons het heeltyd baie stokke in die water gehad (want ons is ’n groot klomp wat almal van hengel hou). Die vis het egter ook fees gehou, want hulle het baie kos by ons gekry maar hulle wou nie aan ons flouse en souse byt nie. Hier en daar het iemand darem ’n vis gevang, soos diè mooi 1,6kg karp wat ek vashou. Ek het later my oom Danie se tweejarige seuntjie se ou speelstokkie gegaps en sommer so onderarm ingegooi. Die aas het sowat 3 meter van die oewer af gelê. My pa het later gesien my stokkie was op pad water toe, en het op my geskree. Ek het lank en baie versigtig gespook met die ou speelstokkie! Die resultaat? ’n Mooi graskarp van 3,4kg. Daarmee het ek die trofee gewen vir die spesiaalste vis. DRIES MURRAY Na vorige suksesse by Harties het ek en my broer weer ŉ dagsessie ingepas by Eagle Waters. Ek was op die dag die gelukkige een en het 3 karp geland - 9,1kg, 10,83kg en 11,43kg. Hier is ek met die 11,43kg karp. DAWID FOURIE Ek was by Parys en het diè karp gevang met plein floaties en kaptein op die mieliebom. Sy gewig was 9,5kg en is vrygelaat. FRANCOIS PRETORIUS Ek het hierdie blou kurper van 2kg in Loskopdam met kunsaas aangekeer en weer vrygelaat. VERNON ROBERTS Hierdie galjoen van 3,57kg het ek gevang met ’n bloedwurm by Groenvlei. TIAN VOGET Diè vis is my persoonlike beste karp wat ek in die middag opgetel het by Klein Princess Vlei op "The original Muti's" se duiwelsdrek. Notion! – Ed. RUAN LESSING Ek het my persoonlike beste karp van 13,63kg in September by Roodekoppies Hengeloord gevang met ’n tigernut wat in Strawberry ingelê is. RUDIE HARTMANN Hierdie swartbaars het 2,80kg geweeg en is gevang op ’n Damuku Pumpkin green worm by Bronkhorstspruitdam in September, 4 dae na volmaan. THEO SWART I caught this beautiful white steenbras at Kabeljouws in Jeffreys. I used pink prawn. JEANDRE BURGER Diè graskarp van 5,9kg was gevang by die keerwal naby Warrenton, Noord-Kaap. Ek het die vis geflous met heuning mielies en ’n floatie. COENIE FOURIE Ek het hierdie pragtige baars van 2,52kg vanaf ’n kayak in Bronkhorstspruitdam gevang op ’n YUM Christie Craw texas rig, en weer vrygelaat vir ’n ander dag se vang. BUCKET LIST by Sean Elton My family and I had a bucket list item to tick, and so arranged an outing for my daughter Ciara, father in law, Frans le Roux and myself to try and catch a shark. I did some checking on fishing guides in Cape Town and decided to contact Roux from Madfin Extreme Beach Shark Fishing. From the time Roux answered my mail, to the end of that exciting day in October on Strandfontein beach, he showed just what professionalism, support, and excellent communication can do when combined with fantastic knowledge, a love for the sport and respect for the sharks. My daughter, Ciara managed to land a 2.35m, 257kg ragged tooth, after a 90-minute fight. This was the highlight of the day, but by no means the end. I managed one bronze whaler shark around 1.95m (104kg) and another one slightly smaller (around 85kg), while my father in law pulled in a 1.5m bronzie (35kg). All the sharks were handled well, tagged and released as quickly as possible. There are not many times when you can actually say this was the perfect day - but this was one of them! Threshers in Langebaan Lagoon I would like to comment on the recent edition of Stywe lyne and both the commentary by Eugene Kruger and the article regarding shark fishing in the Langebaan lagoon (#716). Before I continue , I would like to emphasise that these are my opinions and I have no scientific evidence to back up any of my claims or conclusions. So anyone should feel free to agree or disagree with me. Also, if it sounds like I am blaming anyone, I am blaming myself as much as anyone else, since I am as guilty as any angler out there. My comments pertain to the mystery of the disappearance of the Thresher sharks from the lagoon , and the fairly recent population increase of the bronze whalers. I have been reading Stywe Lyne pretty much all my life , and remember the articles from about 25 years ago about the “poor man’s marlin” and the shark fishing in the lagoon. At that point it became one of my bucket lists to visit this destination and fish for Threshers. However , I never got around to doing so. But I remember the articles about light tackle fishing and how it would be a miracle if someone landed a Thresher on such tackle. That got me thinking. Imagine a light tackle fishing competition on the lagoon on a Saturday. Let’s say there would be about 10 boats participating in the competition , with about 10 hookups and broken off Threshers. That would mean 100 sharks swimming away with hooks impaled in their mouths or stomachs dragging between 10 and 50 meters of nylon behind them. Add to that the average weekend fisherman. Guys would make a pilgrimage to the lagoon. Typically on a Saturday morning the day would start by pumping prawns and throwing a cast net for mullet. Then, later the day, after the quota of Stumpies and Shad have been caught, the call would be made to “have a bit of fun”. Out would come the heavier boat rods, rigged with something like a Penn 49 and spooled with Maxima nylon. Typically J Hooks would have been used. With an outfit like this at least some Threshers would have been landed, but let’s say at least 50% would have been lost. And even the ones that were “landed” would have been manhandled quite badly and the line simply cut just above the hook and the fish released. The point I am making is that it would be reasonable to assume that at any given point in time there would have been hundreds, and I mean hundreds of Threshers swimming around with hooks and nylon dragging behind them. And now, they are gone. Can we really assume that these two facts have nothing to do with each other? Gosh I don’t know. Perhaps it bothers us less if we try and theorise about other reasons for the disappearance of the Threshers. However, now the question must be asked. Why then has the Threshers been “replaced” by the Bronzies? This is a question I cannot answer. But I do know that Bronzies are pretty much everywhere. You don’t have to travel far to fish for them. You can pretty much catch them in the Vaaldam. Also, where years ago any shark was considered “junk”, recently there is a greater conservation awareness wrt shark fishing. The tackle used today is also vastly superior to the tackle of about 25 years ago. Circle hooks, braid, etc. So a lot more sharks are caught and released safely. Anyway, these are just my thoughts. It bothers me, because I feel pretty sure that the disappearance of the Threshers is not a natural phenomenon. We are to blame. And we should take responsibility for that. KABELJOU SLAGTING Geagte Redakteur, Ek was Desember 2018 weer ’n slag in Hentiesbaai, waar ek vergeefs na ’n galjoen of twee gesoek het, asook daardie één groot kabeljou. Ongelukkig kon ek nie ’n galjoen kry nie, maar ons (en my neef Dick) kon darem heelwat mooi kabeljoue, en verskillende soorte haaie, vang. Wat my getref het, was dat ons van 6 Desember tot 5 Januarie minstens drie groot kabeljou stormlope – ja, jy moes die wilde hengelaars sien en beleef – gehad het, waarvan party meer as twee dae geduur het. Ek verseg om in ’n ry te staan om ’n lyn in die water te kry; en ek haat dit as mense nie ’n handbriek het nie, en net aanhou vang, of daar wette en beperkings is of nie. Genadiglik was daar darem gerugte van arrestasies en groot boetes. Die stories het geloop dat daar gedurende die een ‘run’ by Myl 68 tot Myl 72, minstens 750 voertuie getel is in ’n 3km strook. Op een so ’n dag is glo meer as 2500 kabeljoue gevang, waarvan baie meer as 7kg geweeg het. Ek het gelees wat Petri de Wet (Des 2018 uitgawe) geskryf het oor die kabeljoue en hul teelouderdomme. Ek het ook van ‘Marine Protected Areas’ gelees. Skynbaar word ’n wyfiekabeljou eers geslagsryp op sowat 107cm (of steenbras: 65cm -6 jaar). Blykbaar is ’n kabeljou of steenbras van daardie grootte dus nog nie eens geslagsryp nie. Wat ek nou wil weet, is hoe werk dit wetenskaplik? As ek in Desember 2018 kabeljoue gevang het van 40cm (minimum lengte), met ’n dubbele handvol eiers in? Terloops, en hengelaars moet asseblief kennis neem hiervan, ’n 7kg kabeljou kan omtrent ’n 5L emmer vul met haar eiers. Dis alweer Desember - ons vertrou maar hengelaars hou by die wettige kwotas. Hoe herken mens ’n wyfievis? Cobus A Erasmus Wyfie van sowat 56cm, asook twee ander met eiers. *Heel duidelik was die lot op die strand nie ware hengelaars nie maar kommersiële vissers. Hoe anders – ware hengelaars hou net een of twee visse vir eie gebruik, die res gaan terug. Of hoe? ’n Wyfie vis uitken? Het enige leser die antwoord? - Redakteur
