Rising Water Challenges Major Bass (Gauteng) Anglers

A good turnout of with 17 anglers including 2 ladies and 2 juniors entered the March Fish Off at Roodekoppies Dam. At the captains meeting the fishing times were discussed and it was decided to fish Saturday from 07:15 until 18:00, and on Sunday from 05:00 to 12:00.

On Saturday the fishing started in overcast conditions with light rain from time to time, with a downpour during the midday period. The water was initially clean with a temperature between 25 to 28 degrees and the fishing was quite good with most fish being mostly caught neat structures and cover around rock piles.

Fishing on the second day however was challenging – on Sunday morning an unexpected surprise energed when members got up at four to get ready for fishing only to see that the dam level had risen considerably with lots of debris such as tree stumps and hyacinth in the dam. It was also “spooky” as the fog was quite thick, but it lifted later on in the morning. The water temperature had become colder from the water coming in due to the floodgates being opened at Hartebeespoort dam.

Over the weekend the lures of choice included crankbaits, and drop shotting with speed worm, and Tokyo rigs with fighting frogs.
