East Rand Boat Fishing Club’s Annual Event Once a year, at the end of February, the CR Swart Dam in Benoni turns into a buzz of boats and anglers that fills almost every inch of the water. The competition lasts for 12 hours, from sunset to sunrise, and every angler is in search of a tagged fish worth R60 000. The East Rand Boat Fishing Club is essentially a deepsea club that has grown significantly in the past few years and competes successfully in the normal day-to-day angling activities of SADSA (SA Deep Sea Angling Association) and SALTBAA (SA Light Tackle Boat Angling Association). In recent seasons the club has also also produced a number of provincial and national anglers. But they are not only competitive anglers chasing green jackets, they are a group of people, more like a family that cares deeply for the environment, the resources and mostly for the people. They strive to uplift, train, develop and excel the angling sport and every angler involved therein. In the past few years they have managed to bring East Rand boat anglers together annually to not only fish for great prizes in a small dam, where every boat literally anchors on their neighbor's porch, but also to mingle, bond, laugh, joke and have lots of fun. This year no fewer than 80 boats and 200 anglers took part in the competition. Activities start very early morning as all the participants arrive and park their boats neatly on the field and start preparing. Off course there are food stalls, a bar, a braai and many more activities to keep everybody busy until the captain's meeting later in the day, after which the boats are launched. Joyful moments... Now this is another type of efficiency to be seen when five trucks with very skillful drivers start launching the boats in a synchronized, precise rhythm. Each boat captain received a number, which was part of the bucket in which the goodie bag was packed, color-coded and everything. As the boats are launched, the next captain is picked up at the launch, the trailer parked and the next boat hooked. Within 90 minutes all the boats were on the water. The most efficient boat launch system ever, facilitated by bucket lids. The boats could go and look for a suitable spot, anchor and do some feeding, but no fishing was allowed until the flair went off at 18:00 when lines-down started. With drizzling rain through the night it was not the easiest of competitions, but it cleared partially and when the clock hit 06:00 and lines-up commenced, the tagged fish worth R60 000 was still swimming around freely. Nevertheless, the overnighter was a great success once again and another event to be remembered.
